Follow my journey through the Google UX Design Professional Certificate, which I started during the last semester of college amidst the COVID lockdown. I share every up and down, from start to finish.

Transitioning from Coding to UX/UI Design: A Personal Evolution

My journey into the realm of technology began in a traditional Computer Science Engineering (CSE) background, where I immersed myself in learning various coding languages like C++, Python, and Java. Alongside, I delved into the intricacies of operating systems (OS) and data structures and algorithms (DSA), absorbing the foundational knowledge that my university curriculum offered. As I approached my end-term exams, I found myself at a crossroads, contemplating the path ahead. With a desire to explore new horizons, I dedicated three months to delve deeper into software development, hoping to find a lifelong passion.

However, after this intensive exploration, I realized that while coding was intellectually stimulating, it didn’t ignite a spark within me strong enough to envision a lifelong pursuit.

It was then that I made the pivotal decision to make a switch.

Discovering the Creative Pulse

During my college days, alongside my coding endeavors, I discovered a different form of creativity that resonated with me deeply. I found solace in portrait sketches, creating over a hundred sketches and artworks that allowed me to express myself in a different medium.

Additionally, I developed a keen eye for design and user interfaces, particularly drawn to the simple yet impactful designs championed by Google.

It was during this time that I realized there was a whole field dedicated to creating these seamless and meaningful user experiences — I just needed to explore it further.

An Unexpected Discovery

Since I had no prior experience in the design field, I embarked on a journey of discovery. I spent hours researching trends in the market, scouring Google for insights, and delving into various design concepts. It was during this exploration that I stumbled upon the term “UX/UI design.”

Initially, I dismissed it as a gimmicky buzzword, but as I delved deeper into its meaning and significance, I began to feel a sense of connection. I realized that UX/UI design was not just a field but a home — a place where creativity, problem-solving, and innovation intersected.

The more I learned, the more I understood the value and futuristic potential of this field, solidifying my decision to pursue it further.

A Resolution Turned Reality

It all began in 2022 when I made a New Year’s resolution to delve into the world of UX design. It was a personal challenge, a commitment to myself to complete a course in this field and see where it would take me. With a curious mind and a willingness to explore new horizons, I embarked on this journey of discovery.

Navigating Through Options & Sparking Interest

As I delved deeper into the world of UX design, I started looking for courses that could help me understand the fundamentals of this field. That’s when I stumbled upon Coursera’s Google UX Design Professional Certificate. The course caught my attention not just because of its association with Google but also because it offered insights from professionals whose work and designs I deeply admired. It was an opportunity to learn from the best, to understand the intricacies of UX design from those who had firsthand experience in creating impactful user experiences.Despite my lack of prior experience in the design field, I felt a strong connection to it and decided to take the plunge.

Navigating the Course

The Google UX Design Professional Certificate comprised seven courses in total, each offering a unique and engaging learning experience. As I delved deeper into the course content, I found myself increasingly intrigued by the world of UX design, prompting me to commit fully to the journey ahead.

2024

The enrollment process was straightforward and user-friendly, thanks to Coursera’s intuitive platform. I simply clicked on the course for the Google UX Design course, which presented me with two enrollment options: direct enrollment or enrollment through financial aid.

Opting for financial aid was a game-changer for me. Despite not having a stable income source at the time, I was keen on pursuing my learning journey. The financial aid option allowed me to apply for assistance, ensuring that financial constraints did not hinder my education. After filling out the financial aid application form, I had the choice to either enroll immediately or audit the course until my application was approved. I chose to audit the course, which granted me access to all course materials and syllabus with certain restrictions.

After a waiting period of 15 days, I received approval for my financial aid application, and I was officially enrolled in the course. This opportunity was invaluable to me, as it allowed me to pursue my passion for UX design without worrying about the financial burden.

Challenges and Growth

After enrolling in the Google UX Design Professional Certificate, I quickly immersed myself in the coursework. Within a month, I completed my first course and eagerly moved on to the next, tackling each module with enthusiasm and determination. Despite facing personal ups and downs, I remained persistent in my pursuit of knowledge, knowing that each course brought me closer to my goal of earning a professional Google certificate in UX design.

The entire course spanned approximately 1.7 years, during which I encountered various challenges and obstacles. However, I persevered, knowing that the knowledge and skills I was acquiring were invaluable.

Looking back, I realize that with rigorous and persistent effort, the course could have been completed in a shorter timeframe, possibly within 3 to 5 months.

Nonetheless, the journey itself was as important as the destination, and the lessons learned along the way were invaluable.

Tools of the Trade

Throughout the course, I familiarized myself with essential UX design tools like Adobe XD and Figma. While both tools were valuable, Figma quickly became my preferred choice due to its versatility and user-friendly interface. My proficiency in these tools grew as I continued to explore and experiment, honing my design skills along the way.

Deep Dive into Design Thinking

Moreover, the course introduced me to the concept of user research and the critical steps involved in transforming an idea into a tangible product.

I learned how to identify problems, propose solutions, and bridge the gap between them through thorough research and evidence-based decision-making.

This aspect of the course was particularly enlightening, as it provided me with a deeper understanding of the user-centric design process.

Peer Reviews and Discussion Forums

A significant highlight of the course was the opportunity to engage with a community of like-minded individuals. Peer reviews and discussion forums provided me with valuable feedback and insights, enriching my learning experience. It was inspiring to interact with peers who shared a passion for UX/UI design, creating a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
